On Wednesday, October 12, lucky Grade 7 students from The Good Shepherd Catholic School in Barrie headed to Midland to take part in the “Where They Walked” field trip.

Students and staff first made a visit to the beautiful Martyrs’ Shrine in Midland. The group was joined by Father Jim who guided everyone through the beautiful grounds, sharing his vast knowledge of the Martyrs and Saints. The students also learned about the history of the Wendat people and St. Kateri Tekakwitha - the first Native American woman recognized as a Saint by the Catholic church.

After absorbing the wealth of knowledge from Father Jim, the students were invited to assist in the celebration of mass by providing altar servers and readers, and afterwards, the group was blessed with relics of St. Jean de Brebeuf.

Next, students and staff visited one of Midland’s greatest attractions, Sainte Marie among the Hurons. The group explored the historic site and were able to use their new knowledge to make connections between the Martyrs lives and the settlement's history.

The field trip was an amazing success, giving students a first-hand look into “where they walked.”
