Forget about the traditional pen and paper. The ever-evolving use of technology in the classroom has completely transformed the way students are learning today. St. Marie of the Incarnation Catholic School in Bradford recently showcased the way technology is utilized in their school to staff from York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB).

On March 25, staff from St. Padre de Pio Catholic Elementary School in Woodbridge and YCDSB Director of Education Ab Falconi were taken on a school tour where students displayed learning in a variety of ways using programs on tablets and laptops.

Ms. Spratt’s Grade one class brought out the iPads to tackle mathematics. Using QR Codes and the Mathies program, students told stories about money and solved word problems. In the Grade four class lead by Ms. Jeffries, students created riddles with illustrations and emojis using Google Slides and Sketchbook.

Next stop was Ms. Allan’s Grade five class where decimals were on the agenda. Students were given the task of finding a variety of ways to display the number 4.23. Using digital manipulatives, screenshots and voice recordings on iPad programs, the classroom was full of ideas.

Lastly, the Grade seven French class was hard at work using programs like Brightspace (D2L) to create movie recommendations in French and English. Another group utilized Quizlet - an app where students and staff can create their own questions and answers to quiz their fellow classmates.

All YCDSB visitors were inspired by the staff and students at St. Marie of the Incarnation and will return to their home school with lots of new ideas to effectively utilize technology to engage, assess and communicate student learning.
