Switching from one semester to another is a stressful time for some students - worrying about final exam marks and having brand-new classes with different subjects and teachers is a lot to think about. Self-care and preparation are sometimes the last things to cross our minds.

Self-care and being prepared is important for us all and is something that we should focus on more often. Here are some student tips to help us worry a little less: (these tips could be useful in future years too!)

1. Take time for yourself: Use this time to unwind from the stress of exams and feel refreshed before a new semester starts.

2. Get lots of rest: After staying up late to study, a student’s brain and body needs time to recuperate and relax.

3. Disconnect from social media: Connect with the real world - face to face conversations and interactions will rejuvenate healthy personal relationships.

4. Spend time with family and friends: Ensure that you take time for family and friends, as the new semester will likely be busy and may limit your time with them.

5. Spend time outdoors: Clear your mind and refresh your spirit by enjoying outdoor activities such as: sledding, skating or skiing, or simply walking.

“Exercise and other physical activity produce endorphins—chemicals in the brain that act as natural painkillers—and also improve the ability to sleep, which in turn reduces stress.” (https://adaa.org/understanding-anxiety/related-illnesses/other-related-conditions/stress/physical-activity-reduces-st)

6. Be prepared: Ensure that you have all necessary materials prepared for your new classes and that you know which classes you have and when. This will ease some stress and help you be more organized.

7. Connect with teachers: Make sure that you know which teachers you have for your classes, and emailing or directly asking questions or discussing concerns prior to the new semester might make things easier for you.

8. Make sure that you know which extracurricular activities are offered in the new semester: If there are any clubs, sports teams, or activities starting in the new semester, make sure that you are aware of them. Plan to join if you are interested. This will enhance your time at school.

Once you find what works for you, stick to it! These tips and tricks will help you better prepare for new things, both now and into the future.

Good luck to everyone in the new semester!
