On April 4th at 1:15 p.m., the students of St. Joseph’s Catholic High School in Barrie joined over 100,000 students across Ontario in taking a stand for our education. The initiative was quick to spread as information was shared across several social media platforms, inspiring and encouraging many to jump into action.

The current political landscape means that many students might soon be affected by the proposed changes. From major cuts to post-secondary funding, healthcare, specialized school programs, Ontario Arts Council and its Indigenous Culture Fund, as well as increased class sizes, and at least 5844 teacher jobs in jeopardy, the government’s proposed changes will certainly impact students and their families.

When considering these changes, it is important to recognize the overall impact and challenges these may have for different people in our our community. We must all do what we can to ensure everyone receives the support, and opportunities we all rightfully deserve regardless of our circumstances.

Students took to the streets, holding several signs or standing together in support, receiving recognition from by-passers, teachers, and the community on our admirable and mature efforts. It was very encouraging to witness the success of our student-led initiative.

marching “Overall it went extremely well! Despite students only making up 3.8% of the population, this does not mean we can be ignored,” commented Anjelique C., a Grade 12 student. “We may be small, but we are fierce and will certainly not relinquish responsibility for our own education and for others.”
