Throughout the month of February, Holy Trinity Catholic High School (HT) in Bradford West Gwillimbury celebrated Black History Month. Every morning, the social justice team held a contest, to commemorate and honour the legacy of Black Canadians’ past and present. This year, the theme of Black History Month revolved around Black Canadian Youth: Boundless, Rooted, and Proud. Thus, students were educated on Black history as well as what it means to be a Black Canadian.
The contest was simple: on the announcements, every morning, a question was posed to the students. They were given a quote as well as four possible people who may have said those words, to choose from. Students would email their answers. At the end of the month, the points were tallied and first, second and third place classes were rewarded with various prizes. The entire school participated in the competition and it turned out to be a great way for HT students to learn about Black heritage while having fun at the same time.
Not only did the social justice team run the contest, but they also put up dozens of posters around the school commemorating the achievements of Black Canadians.
