Students at Jean Vanier Catholic High School in Collingwood have eagerly awaited the month of March for quite a while, in anticipation of the upcoming OFSAA tournaments. OFSAA, which stands for “Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations”, is an organisation which seeks to “foster student success and enrich education through school sport,”.
The tournaments held by OFSAA bring together premier student athletes in Ontario, and competition is fierce. There are over 40 OFSAA tournaments held annually, all of which span a variety of sports, from skiing to golf to hockey.
In true Jean Vanier fashion, students have risen to this challenge, with both individual students as well as whole teams qualifying for OFSAA.
Student Emma G. won gold at the skiing finals held in February, and with two more upcoming tournaments in the month of March, spirits are high. Student Garet M., who will be swimming for Jean Vanier, said “[OFSAA] gives us a chance to show all of Ontario how much we’ve accomplished, and there’s a great sense of community that comes with competing,”. Grade 12 student Eric L. stated he was “...really excited because it’s my last year, and my last chance to play hockey and represent Vanier,”. Eric and his team mates will compete in the hockey finals in Kincardine on Monday, March 18th, while the swim team will compete in Toronto March 5th-6th. Good luck to all athletes, and congratulations to all previous winners!
