What happens when students are given real tools, real expectations, and real-world opportunities? They gain confidence, develop practical skills, and see how their learning connects to future pathways.
Arts & Culture Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) students from Patrick Fogarty Catholic Secondary School are experiencing this through Crossfade — a series of Saturday filmmaking workshops at Lakehead University’s Orillia campus. Working hands-on with teacher Jeff Cole, university faculty, students are exploring sound, storytelling, and professional filmmaking equipment while learning about post-secondary programs and careers in media.
Beyond the workshops, students are applying their skills by livestreaming local sporting events. Their broadcasts have impressed athletes, families, and community organizers with their polish and professionalism.
Secondary Curriculum Consultant Krista Barban highlighted the broader impact, “These experiences are a clear example of what the SHSM program can look like when authentic partnerships, high expectations, and dedicated educators align. Students gain confidence, develop meaningful skills, and better understand real-world pathways.”
Programs like Crossfade reflect the board’s commitment to student achievement and well-being, and to creating clear pathways to post-secondary education and careers. We’re proud to celebrate Jeff Cole, and all staff and students bringing these opportunities to life.
