With higher temperatures from May to September, schools may adjust parts of the day to help students stay comfortable and safe. Our staff make thoughtful decisions based on daily conditions and the needs of their school community.
Since our schools are spread across a large area, temperatures can vary. Principals and staff use our High Temperature Guideline Reference Chart to help decide what’s best each day.
When it’s very warm, schools may:
-
Shorten or adjust recess and outdoor activities
-
Encourage play in shaded areas
-
Offer indoor breaks to cool down
-
Remind students to drink water often
-
Reschedule or limit physical activities, like gym and sports
-
Move activities to cooler areas in the building if possible
Families can help by:
-
Packing a refillable water bottle
-
Dressing children in light, loose-fitting clothing and a hat
-
Applying sunscreen before school
-
Letting the school know about any medical needs
-
Talking with children about taking breaks and staying cool
Thank you for working with us to keep our students safe and comfortable in warm weather!
