The Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board (SMCDSB) offers continuing education courses for students 18 and older who still need credits to complete their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). This program differs from other adult learning centres by offering personalized support and a flexible schedule.

The program, run through Our Lady of Hope Catholic Continuing Education School, provides mature students the opportunity to work one-on-one with teachers to achieve their personal and professional goals. It also addresses concerns about credit requirements by using Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR). This allows students to earn credits by validating skills and knowledge gained through work or life experience—making diploma completion more achievable.

“Completing a high school diploma as an adult opens new doors - it can help advance careers or lead to post-secondary education,” said Brad Shoreman, principal of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Continuing Education School. “Our program is unique because it’s centred around students and their schedules. We recognize the challenges of balancing work, family, and education, which is why our teachers work with students one-on-one, meeting at times and locations that suit their needs. This ensures every adult learner receives the support required to succeed on their own terms.”

Each student will work with a dedicated teacher to develop a flexible plan to earn the necessary credits for their OSSD. This may include mature credits, co-op, independent study, e-Learning, and more.
