On September 25, schools across our board proudly celebrated La journée des Franco-Ontarien. This year marked the 50th anniversary of the Franco-Ontarian flag, with celebrations taking place across the province. Schools received their own flag to display and organize in-school activities, highlighting this important milestone in our province’s French language and cultural history. French teachers led a variety of celebrations to honour the day and engage students in authentic cultural experiences.
This annual event offers a meaningful opportunity to recognize the richness of Francophone culture and the importance of the French language in Ontario. As emphasized in the Ontario FSL curriculum, students deepen their learning when they participate in authentic French language and cultural celebrations.
In addition, 300 SMCDSB elementary and secondary students attended the official flag-raising ceremony at Barrie City Hall, hosted by La Clé de la Baie. The event featured dignitaries who spoke about the importance of the day, shared their own French language learning journeys, and encouraged students to continue building their skills. The celebration concluded with a concert by French artist Le Flo Franco, who had the crowd singing and dancing along.
This special anniversary served as a memorable reminder of the vibrancy of the French language and culture in Ontario.
