Last week, more than 1,500 Core French students from Grades 6 to 12 enjoyed an exciting musical experience as part of a series of concerts featuring Missy D, a talented French-English hip-hop artist. Held on April 8 and 9, the concerts brought students together from across the region. The event celebrated the connection between the French language and music in a fun and engaging way!
Students packed the Five Points Theatre in Barrie and the Orillia Opera House in Orillia, eager to see Missy D live. Some even got in the spirit early, listening to her music as they walked to the venue. Many showed up with handmade signs and custom t-shirts, ready to cheer her on. From the moment Missy D stepped on stage, she filled the space with energy! Students danced, clapped, and sang along – en français. The concerts weren’t just performances; they turned into a celebration of French language and culture brought to life through hip-hop.
As a competitor in the renowned international music competition, Manie Musicale, Missy D showed how modern music and the French language blend in powerful, creative ways. Her story proved that learning a second language can open exciting doors in music and beyond.
For many students, her performance was an example of what’s possible when you embrace language and culture with energy and authenticity. Students walked away with new pride in their French skills and a fresh appreciation for hip-hop as an art form.
What made the experience even more memorable was Missy D’s generosity and her genuine connection with the audience. After each show, she stayed to meet her fans, chatting, signing autographs, and taking photos. Students who came in as audience members left as true fans, carrying memories they won’t soon forget.
Reflecting on the concerts, Chantal Ross, French as a Second Language Consultant (FSL), shared how meaningful the experience was for students. "We always aim to show students that French isn’t just something you learn in a classroom — it’s a language that connects people and cultures," Ross explained. "Missy D makes that so real for them. She brings an energy to French and makes it fun."
Ross loved seeing how engaged the students were during the shows. "It’s amazing watching them sing along and really get into the music," she said. "Experiences like this give them more confidence in French and remind them that learning it can be exciting."
She added with a smile, "It was one of those moments when French came to life for our students — and that’s exactly what we hoped for."
