The first semester of the school year was highlighted by two new initiatives geared to high school students and science teachers at the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board (SMCDSB).

The Green Energy STEM Tour travelled far and wide to reach all nine SMCDSB high schools and 20 classrooms this semester. In partnership with Lakehead University and Let’s Talk Science, students participated in the interactive presentation and hands-on activities about solar and wind power.

Twenty science teachers at SMCDSB enjoyed a professional development day at Lakehead University, exploring numeracy connections to chemistry and physics. Educators participated in a Micro:bit activity which touches on the simulation of human living conditions such as heart rate, temperature and carbon dioxide levels while living on a space station.

These two initiatives were a big hit and enjoyed by staff and students throughout the Board. Thank you to all involved, including Lakehead University and Let’s Talk Science for ensuring its success!
