Introducing Saint Teresa of Calcutta

Introducing Saint Teresa of Calcutta
Posted on 09/06/2016

Mother Teresa, now known as Saint Teresa of Calcutta, was elevated to Sainthood this past Sunday, September 4, in Rome.

The canonization was a historic event - celebrated all over the world. Mother Teresa was elevated to Sainthood after Pope Francis recognized a second miracle attributed to the Albanian Catholic nun in December 2015.

Saint Teresa of Calcutta is known world-wide for her commitment to helping impoverished communities in over 130 countries. In 1948, she founded the Missionaries of Charity, which consisted of thousands of sisters who served individuals who lived in severe poverty and had serious health problems.

Saint Teresa of Calcutta made several visits to Toronto in the 1970s and 80s, impacting thousands through her simple message of care, compassion and love. In 1979, she received the Nobel Peace Prize  for her humanitarian work. Her legacy lives on through the continued work of the Missionaries of Charity in Toronto and five Mother Teresa schools including Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board’s Mother Teresa Catholic School in Bradford West Gwillimbury.

Although a Saint now, Teresa will always be considered a “mother” to many, as her love and compassion for millions will forever be cherished throughout the world.
