Dual Credit Success Story: Joey Giovannone

Dual Credit Success Story: Joey Giovannone

One of the amazing programs that the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board offers to students is the Dual Credit program. Dual Credit is a course where students receive a college and high school credit at the same time and is taught by college faculty and supported by a high school teacher.

Students who take the course are able to explore options for their future after secondary school. We are happy to showcase some of the success stories that are a result of the Dual Credit program.

Joey Giovannone, a Grade 12 student at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School in Tottenham, found himself a few credits short of graduating this spring. With a lack of motivation to attend class, Joey was left with few options. His school suggested that he apply for school within a college (SWAC) and luckily, he snagged the last spot in the program.

Taking the Developing Leadership course, Joey discovered a new way of learning - a flexible schedule, independence and freedom to accomplish his goals. He even had access to a Youth Transition Worker who provided him guidance and the confidence to pursue post-secondary education - something Joey never considered.

Joey feels that the program has prepared him for the college life. He recently applied and was accepted into the Police Foundations program at Georgian College for next year! He recommends the SWAC and dual credit program and says, “Take every chance you can get! I wasn’t thinking of going to college before I came here. Being in this environment made me feel more comfortable and encouraged about coming to college next year.”
