On December 6, the social justice team from St. Marguerite D’Youville Catholic School in Barrie made it their mission to fundraise as much as they could to help support other students this winter. At the school’s movie day, students sold popcorn in order to purchase hats and mitts for students of the Pikangikum First Nation.

The reserve is located near Kenora, in northern Ontario, and has 2700 people. The Pikangikum First Nation has been in a state of emergency for the past four years due to inadequate water, sewage, and electrical systems. Unfortunately, power outages are a common occurrence, leaving the residents to endure average temperatures of -20°C.

Thanks to the popcorn sales and the generous donations of the St. Marguerite D’Youville community, they were able to send 122 pairs of mitts, 72 hats and 2 baby snowsuits to the Pikangikum First Nation reserve! The school’s Knitting Club also made and donated a number of scarves.
