Artificial Intelligence (AI) Guidelines

Purpose & Approach

To guide the ethical, safe, and responsible use of Generative AI (GenAI) in classrooms and school operations (K–12). Our approach is to educate and guide, not restrict, grounding AI use in Catholic values and Multi-Year Strategic Plan priorities (equity, inclusion, well-being).

Why We Don't Block AI

AI is already embedded in everyday tools (e.g., Grammarly, Google Translate, Canva) and blocking it is ineffective. Instead, we:

  • Use on-screen reminders before accessing AI tools.

  • Approve specific tools for use with Board accounts: Google Gemini, Notebook LM, and Microsoft Copilot.

Key principles

  • Ethical & inclusive use: uphold fairness, transparency, and human dignity.

  • Academic integrity: AI supports learning, but cannot replace authentic student work.

  • Safety & privacy: never input personal or identifiable information into AI tools.

  • Transparency: be clear when AI is used for learning, communication, or content creation.

  • Critical thinking: Treat AI-generated content as a starting point, not a finished product.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are these AI Guidelines about?

They explain how AI will be used responsibly in SMCDSB schools to enhance learning, encourage critical thinking, and protect student privacy.

Why is the Board allowing AI tools?

AI is part of modern life and learning. Rather than banning it, we’re teaching students to use it wisely, ethically, and safely.

Will educators be required to use AI?

No. Educators may choose to use AI as a teaching or learning support tool, but it will not replace traditional learning.

How will my child’s information be protected?

Staff and students are instructed not to enter personal or identifiable information into any AI platform. In addition, the platforms that we use are within the board’s ecosystem.

What if my child uses AI inappropriately?

It will be treated as an academic integrity issue, just like plagiarism, with opportunities to reflect and learn.

How does this connect to Catholic education?

The guidelines emphasize human dignity, honesty, and discernment, ensuring AI use aligns with Catholic values.
