Dear SMCDSB Staff:

I wish to take this opportunity to provide you with an update regarding the current labour situation in our board. Today, the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association (OCSTA) announced that CUPE has reached a tentative agreement. This means that our custodial staff will no longer be engaged in labour action. It is important to note that OSSTF, representing our designated early childhood educators, educational assistants, maintenance, and office and clerical staff, has not yet settled and so their job sanctions will continue.

There may be some confusion in the media around union representation of certain employee groups - the fact is that representation varies for each school board across the province. At the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board, most of our educational support staff (designated early childhood educators, educational assistants, maintenance, and office and clerical staff) are represented by OSSTF and they have not yet reached a deal.

This negotiation process has been complicated and lengthy for all those involved. It is especially difficult because some of our staff have settled, while others remain without contracts. We must continue to support one another and remember that our relationships as part of a larger Catholic family will help sustain us during this difficult time. Please continue to check for updates regularly on our board website at www.smcdsb.on.ca, Employee Connect at https://sites.google.com/a/smcdsb.on.ca/intranet/on or Twitter @smcdsb

Yours in Faith,

Brian Beal
Director of Education
