Dear SMCDSB Students, Staff and Families,

As a nation, as a Catholic community and as a school board, we are mourning the residential school tragedy in our country. We pray for the souls of the children, for all those who suffered because of the residential school system, and for all who continue to be impacted by that trauma today.

At this time, to offer condolences and grieve as a community, we invite you to offer your prayers through our Prayer Link. Responses will be anonymously shared on this page of our board website. We hope our virtual prayers will provide our community with an opportunity to share our collective voice as we mourn this tragedy in solidarity. We hope you are able to use this web page to learn more deeply about this national tragedy as it pertains to truth, healing, and reconciliation.

The work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada has played an important role in bringing the painful truth about our shared history to light, and the recognition that there is still much work to be done.

In the words of The Honourable Murray Sinclair, former Senator and Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, “EDUCATION is what got us here, and EDUCATION is what will get us out.”

The Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board acknowledges and is sorry for the lost lives, the trauma and the injustices suffered by the First Nations, Métis and Inuit in our community and across Turtle Island. We look forward to building on our progress to date, and our collective work toward advancing truth, healing and reconciliation in a meaningful way. Please join us in prayer during this time of mourning.

Yours in Faith,
